Description of three cases of fallen ear syndrome in cattle
Abstract
The syndrome known as “fall ear” is a clinical disease observed in cattle.
Several etiologies have been described to cause the disease. The aim of
this study was to characterize 3 cases of “fall ear” in cattle, with Cryptococcus
identification. Two cases were from feedlot cattle and one case from a dairy calf.
Clinical examinations, necropsies, histopathological techniques and different
methodologies were carried out, including fungal isolation and identification.
In all the cases, an increase in the size of the Gasser ganglion was observed. A
granulomatous reaction and structures positive to PAS dyeing compatible with
Cryptococci were found in the histopathological study. A diagnosis compatible
with nervous cryptococcosis in the 3 cases was determined through isolation
and typification of Cryptococcus neoformans in 1 animal, anatomo-histopathological
studies and structure and dyeing. Through tissue PAS dyeing and fungal
isolation, structures compatible with Cryptococci were described.
