Poplars in nursery, management, operating costs

In the FAV-UNRC Nursery, a propagation experiment was carried out on 4 poplar clones: Populus deltoides cv Stoneville 67, Populus deltoides cv Alton, Populus x euroamericana cv Longhi and Populus x euroamericana cv Luisa Avanzo. The initial condition and the yield in number of cuttings per mother plant were evaluated, the times required for the processing of the propagation material and the operating costs were identified. Survival was evaluated depending on whether autumn or pre-spring cuttings were used. The cultivars P. x euroamericana highlighted a greater potential in number of shoots than the cultivars P. deltoides. The operational performance was associated with the characteristics of each clone and the expression of growth in each productive cycle, which influences the operating costs. Survival was greater than 79 % in most treatments, statistically differentiating (p<0.05) with the lowest values for the Alton-Prespring (27,67%) and Longhi-Prespring (54,43%) combinations. Cuttings collected in autumn achieved a more uniform response between clones, with high survival percentages.
