Importance of the damage caused by Dichelops furcatus (t) in maize crops in southern region of Cordoba
Abstract
The aim of this work was to dtetermine the prevalence, incidence,
severity and spatial distribution of the damage caused by Dichelops furcatus
Fabricius in maize crops in the southern region of the province of Córdoba,
Argentina. During the 2015/16 and 2016/17 agricultural campaigns, a survey of
the damage caused by D. furcatus was carried out on plots of early-sowing and
late-sowing maize. In each plot the incidence of damage-I (%) and severity-S was
evaluated, using a scale of 5 degrees (0-4). The P-prevalence was determined as
the percentage of lots with presence of the pest. Spatial distribution of plants
with damage was calculated through the variance/mean ratio, Morisita index
and Lloyd’s index. Early sowing maize crops showed higher P (90% in 2015/16
and 85% in 2016/17), I (28,2% in 2015/16 and 6,9% in 2016/17) and S (0,36 in
2015/16 and 0,09 in 2016/17) than late-sowing maize where P was 63 and 76%,
I was 2,5 y 5,9% and S was 0,04 y 0,08% in 2015/16 and 2016/17 respectively.
Spatial distribution of pest incidence, in both campaigns, showed indexes with
values greater than 1 for all plots evaluated, indicating an aggregate distribution
of the damage caused by the pest under field conditions. Dichelops furcatus is
a pest of high prevalence at the regional level, especially in early-sowing maize.
