Abstract

Currently, the yellow aphid Melanaphis sacchari is the most important aphid in different sorghum production areas in Argentina. Considering the importance of the crop in the department of Río Cuarto and the recent appearance of this species, the objective was to survey sorghum plots to detect it and evaluate its abundance. Eight plots were sampled in the southwestern region of Cordoba, using a diagonal design with four sampling stations of 5 plants, on which one leaf from the upper and one from the lower stratum were examined. The prevalence, incidence and abundance of the aphid per leaf were determined using a 5-grade visual scale. The insect was correctly identified using morphological characters typical of aphids. Aphids were present in all the plots surveyed, with more than 50% of leaves with colonies, always located on the abaxial side. In the upper stratum the average abundance was 1.73 and in the lower stratum it was 3.16, indicating a higher number of aphids on the basal leaves. It is suggested to develop studies related to population dynamics, losses and management tactics of this new species present on sorghum in the southwestern region of Cordoba.
