Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Pichia kudriavzevii on immune
organs and small intestine histopathological changes of broiler chickens
feed with monensin (MON). Birds (3 replicates/4 treatments, 5 broilers chickens/
replicate, total: 60) were housed in metallic cages and experimental diets were:
treatment (T) T1: basal diet (B); T2: B + MON (50 mg/kg); T3: B + P. kudriavzevii (1
g yeast/kg feed); T4: B + MON + P. kudriavzevii. The experimental period was 28
days. At the end of the feeding trial, small intestine, spleen, thymus and bursa of
Fabricius (BF) were removed to evaluate histopathological changes; relative and
absolute weighs were determined. Spleen weights did not show significant differences
(p <0.05) while these values showed a negative trend when MON was
added. Thymus weights showed a significant decrease (p <0.05) in T2. Spleen,
thymus, BF and spleen/BF radius values showed a positive trend with the addition
of yeast. The histopathology of the thymus in T2 showed an alteration in
the cortex-medullary relationship, T4 showed less evident cortex development.
Spleen samples from T2 showed splenic congestion and cells with cariorrexis
nuclei, T4 showed less congestion. A decrease in villus height and less goblet
cells, with normal numbers of intraepithelial lymphocytes were observed in T2.
The addition of 50 mg / kg MON negatively affected the immune organs and the
small intestine. These changes were attenuated with the addition of yeast. In
future studies, these negative effects of coccidiostat could be fully counteracted
with a higher yeast concentration.
