Abstract

This study evaluated the expression of glucose/mannose and galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine glycoconjugates in pigs with gastritis caused by Helicobacter spp., using lectin histochemistry techniques. Gastric samples were collected from 86 pigs at a slaughterhouse in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, Argentina, and classified into five groups based on the type of gastritis (acute/chronic) and the presence or absence of Helicobacter spp. Samples were processed using histological stains (Hematoxylin-Eosin, Giemsa, and Warthin-Starry) for gastritis diagnosis and bacterial identification, and biotinylated lectins were used to determine glycoconjugate expression.

Results showed that acute gastritis was characterized by polymorphonuclear infiltration and hemorrhage, while chronic gastritis exhibited mononuclear infiltration in the lamina propria. The expression of galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine was significant in the glandular area and scarce in the lamina propria and surface epithelium. In contrast, glucose/mannose glycoconjugates were predominantly expressed in the lamina propria of samples with chronic gastritis, with low staining in normal tissues, revealing statistically significant differences between these groups. No significant differences were found in epithelial and glandular expression among groups.

This study highlights glycoconjugate alterations as markers of pathological changes in the gastric mucosa associated with Helicobacter spp., emphasizing the zoonotic relevance of this infection. The findings have implications for both animal production and public health, underscoring the need for continued research in this field.
