Abstract

Feline respiratory disease complex (FRDC) is a globally distributed disease common in places where there is a high concentration of cats. Agents commonly associated with FRDC are feline Herpesvirus, feline Calicivirus, Chlamydophila felis, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Mycoplasma felis, although the role of the latter is controversial as it can be found in healthy or unhealthy animals. In the region, there is a lack of records about its detection in cats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect M. felis in cats with and without clinical symptoms compatible with FRDC using PCR. A cross-sectional study was performed collecting specimens (ocular, nasal and buccal swabs) from 19 cats with and without symptomatology. Specimens were first tested by PCR for Mycoplasma sp., considered as screening test, and positive specimens were tested by a species-specific PCR for M. felis. Five cats (5/19- 26% - CI 95% 9.1-51.2) were PCR positive for Mycoplasma sp. and of these, only one (1/19-5%- CI 95% 0.1-26) was positive for M. felis species-specific PCR. It was concluded that M. felis and possibly other Mycoplasmas species were detected in healthy and unhealthy cats.
